MOCHA DICK WHITE WHALE OF THE PACIFIC: Mocha Dick was the real life
Moby Dick. He rampaged through the pacific for thirty years in the early1800's,
eating whaleboats and whalemen and seemingly avenging his fellow spermacetti.
Melville well knew of him as did all the other "blubber boilers" but he is
rarely mentioned as a source for Melville's whale. When "Mocha" (named after
the Chillean island off which he was originally sighted)was finally
apprehended he had nineteen irons in him.
